How to Wash Period Underwear (And Make It Last)
One of the biggest questions new period underwear owners have isn't about how they work — it's about how to wash them. Get the care routine right and a good pair can last 2–5 years. Get it wrong and you'll shorten their lifespan or reduce their absorbency. Here's everything you need to know.
Step 1: Rinse in Cold Water First
As soon as you take them off, rinse your period underwear under cold running water. This is the most important step. Cold water prevents blood from setting into the fabric — hot water does the opposite and bakes stains in permanently.
Rinse until the water runs mostly clear. You don't need to scrub hard — just let the water do the work. This pre-rinse step makes the actual wash dramatically more effective.
Step 2: Machine Wash on a Gentle Cycle
After rinsing, toss them in the washing machine with your regular laundry. A few rules to follow:
- Use cold or warm water — never hot. High heat degrades the leak-proof layer over time.
- Use a gentle cycle — the delicates or lingerie setting is ideal.
- Use mild detergent — regular detergent is fine. Avoid anything heavily scented or harsh.
- Skip the fabric softener — this is critical. Fabric softener coats the absorbent fibers and reduces how much liquid they can hold. Even one wash with softener can noticeably affect performance.
- Skip bleach — bleach breaks down the fabric and the waterproof barrier.
Step 3: Air Dry — Always
Never put period underwear in the dryer. The heat damages the multi-layer construction, especially the leak-proof barrier. Instead, hang them up or lay flat to dry. They typically dry within a few hours at room temperature, or faster if hung near airflow.
If you're in a hurry, a fan or open window speeds things up significantly.
Can You Hand Wash Instead?
Absolutely — hand washing is actually gentler and extends the life of your underwear even further. After your cold rinse, fill a sink with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Gently work it through the fabric for a minute or two, then rinse thoroughly until no soap remains. Hang to dry as usual.
If you wash intimates by hand regularly, our Portable Mini Washing Machine is a game-changer — it handles the agitation for you gently and is designed specifically for delicates like period underwear.
What About Stains?
If a stain sets despite rinsing, try soaking in cold water with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide for 15–20 minutes before washing. Avoid stain removers with enzymes or bleaching agents, as these can damage the fabric layers.
Light staining on the inside of the gusset is completely normal over time — it doesn't affect how the underwear performs, just how it looks.
How Often Should You Wash Them?
After every wear — just like regular underwear. Never wear the same pair two days in a row without washing. If you're on your period, rinse immediately after removing and wash within 24 hours for best results.
How Many Pairs Do You Need?
Most people find that 4–6 pairs comfortably covers a full cycle, especially if you're doing laundry mid-week. That's exactly why our Bundles & Gift Sets exist — stocking up with a multi-pack saves money and means you always have a clean pair ready.
